Open Notification settings
Receive storage, backup, and security alerts through Microsoft 365. In DSM, open Control Panel, Notification, E-mail, and choose a custom SMTP provider. Labels differ between DSM releases.
DSM configuration and alert scope
Select a custom SMTP provider in Control Panel → Notification → Email. Use STARTTLS and authentication, then set the sender to the connected mailbox. DSM versions may call the encryption option Secure connection.
After the built-in test succeeds, review Rules to choose which warnings deserve email. Avoid enabling every informational event or storage noise can hide urgent disk and backup failures.
Test the alerts that matter
The Send a test email button verifies the transport, but it does not prove that every DSM package uses the same notification rule. Review Hyper Backup, Active Backup, storage, certificate, and security notifications separately.
Use a dedicated connection for the NAS. Its per-client delivery statistics then provide a quick signal: zero messages may be normal, while an unexpected spike can reveal a failing backup or repeated system warning.
Before you save
Use the connected Microsoft 365 address as the sender. Store the generated password securely; it cannot be displayed again.
Send a small test message to an address you control. Confirm delivery before enabling production notifications.
If the test fails
Check that port 587 is permitted by the network, STARTTLS is enabled, and no spaces were copied into the credentials.
Never share passwords or message content. Revoke and recreate the connection if the password is lost.
